What Is Decarbonisation?

Decarbonisation meaning

Decarbonisation is the systematic process of reducing and ultimately eliminating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions to address the root causes of global warming and climate change. At Green Nova Renewable Energy, this means accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power. While greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide impact our climate, carbon dioxide remains the most significant contributor—making its reduction foundational to our mission. GNRE is committed to reimagining how energy is generated, stored, and consumed, driving innovation that lowers carbon intensity, enhances sustainability, and paves the way to a net-zero future.

Through decarbonisation, GNRE leads the way in transforming the energy sector by empowering individuals, businesses, and communities to embrace renewable solutions—ensuring cleaner air, stable climates, and a healthier planet for future generations.

Why is decarbonisation needed?

The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century was a transformative period that significantly accelerated the development of nations worldwide through rapid industrialization. This era marked the widespread combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, petrol, and natural gas to power machinery and production, leading to the release of massive levels of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. This surge in fossil fuel consumption has caused global temperatures to rise by approximately 1 degree Celsius since the Industrial Revolution began. The resulting environmental impact includes increased air pollution, degradation of natural resources, and altered climate patterns, all contributing to the current climate crisis.

Despite advances in technology, fossil fuels continued to dominate the global energy mix, constituting 78% of energy sources as of 2020. This dependence makes it imperative to shift toward renewable energy sources to promote sustainability, curb emissions, and prevent further dangerous temperature increases that threaten ecological and human systems.

Recognizing the global urgency, world leaders convened in Paris, France, in 2015 to address climate change through the Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty adopted by 196 nations during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21). The Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C, ideally 1.5°C, by combating the root causes of climate change and supporting nations in adapting to its effects. It sets forth a global framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, develop sustainable energy policies, and bolster resilience against climate impacts, reflecting a collective commitment to safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Green Nova Renewable Energy aligns with this global imperative by advancing decarbonisation, transitioning energy systems away from fossil fuels to renewable technologies, and supporting sustainable development consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Decarbonisation is needed for several critical reasons, especially from the perspective of Green Nova Renewable Energy (GNRE):

Green Nova Renewable Energy embraces decarbonisation not only to lead in clean energy innovation but to provide environmental, health, economic, and social benefits that together pave the way toward a net-zero carbon future.

In recent years, global momentum for decarbonisation has intensified, driven by the critical urgency to address climate change. A landmark in this journey is the 2015 Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty adopted by 196 countries to collectively limit global warming to well below 2°C and ideally to 1.5°C. Under the Paris Agreement, nations establish climate action targets known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which lay out their plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience against climate impacts, and promote sustainable development.

India has emerged as a leader in this global effort, committing at COP 26 in Glasgow to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. Additionally, India has set an ambitious goal to reach 500GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, demonstrating its commitment to transforming its energy landscape.

Corporations and financial institutions also play a pivotal role as non-state actors in the decarbonisation movement. Leading companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and PepsiCo have made organizational-level net zero commitments, actively contributing to global emission reductions.

Aligned with this momentum, Green Nova Renewable Energy (GNRE) has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, setting a target 30 years ahead of India’s national goal. This ambition reinforces GNRE’s leadership and dedication to advancing renewable energy solutions that accelerate the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

This strong commitment by GNRE empowers it to drive meaningful climate action while supporting sustainable development objectives globally and locally.

Decarbonisation and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Decarbonisation at Green Nova Renewable Energy (GNRE) aligns deeply with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a universal blueprint to protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. Particularly, GNRE’s decarbonisation efforts resonate with SDG 13: Climate Action, which calls for urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.

By embracing sustainability principles and harmonizing its decarbonisation initiatives with the SDGs, GNRE accelerates the transition to a low-carbon future while simultaneously fostering inclusive, resilient communities. This alignment reinforces GNRE’s commitment not only to reducing emissions but also to promoting sustainable development holistically—addressing environmental, social, and economic dimensions to benefit current and future generations.

GNRE’s approach reflects a dedicated contribution to global climate goals, supporting equitable and sustainable energy access, improved environmental stewardship, and long-term societal well-being aligned with the SDGs framework.
